Pedal power pushes fundraising total past 20,000 pounds

A team of staff from Westleigh rode from London to Paris for charity

A team of staff from leading affordable housing provider Westleigh Homes has raised more than £20k for a brain injury charity by cycling from London to Paris.

Team Westleigh made up of six intrepid employees and directors from the Leicestershire-based firm completed the 308-mile trek from capital to capital over the course of four days earlier this month.

A flood of donations from friends, family and colleagues of the riders, as well as Westleigh Homes’ corporate partners, has pushed the fundraising total comfortably in excess of the team’s £20k target, to a total of £22,390 by the time they had completed their journey.

They took on the challenge in support of Leicestershire Leicester and Rutland Headway. The charity played an important role in assisting a popular colleague’s recovery from a serious illness.

Ian Jones, Managing Director of Westleigh and one of the six staff to have undertaken the gruelling challenge, explained: “In October 2015 our lovely receptionist Helen Longdon suffered a devastating stroke as a result of a brain haemorrhage. She was rushed to University Hospital Coventry for life-saving surgery, but that was only the beginning of her battle.

“Due to the fabulous work of the paramedics, University Hospital Coventry, the volunteers at Leicestershire Leicester and Rutland Headway, and the love and support of her family, she has so far made an incredible recovery. She is now returning to work and we are all doing our best to support her in whatever way we can.

“When a group of us began discussing the idea of cycling from London to Paris, we all agreed we would like to raise money for a cause that was meaningful to us all.

“We set ourselves a target that we felt was ambitious but achievable. To have reached and exceeded it is an incredible feeling and we’d like to thank everyone who has made a donation.

“We have seen first-hand the impact that a brain injury can have on sufferers and their loved ones, so we hope the money we’ve raised can play a part in helping others in Helen’s position to get on the road to recovery.”

A spokesperson Leicestershire Leicester and Rutland Headway said: “We are immensely grateful for the funds raised by staff at Westleigh Homes and greatly impressed by the amount they have raised.

“As we rely on fundraising to supplement the funding we receive for our services this means a great deal to us.

“It allows us to maintain high standards of provision and go beyond the basic requirements of the service.”

Leicestershire Leicester and Rutland Headway is a voluntary organisation specialising in providing support and services to adults with an acquired or traumatic brain injury and their families.
