We have given a talk to construction students from a local college and invited them for a tour of our St Mary’s Park development in Leicester to provide an insight into work in the industry.
A total of 35 Level 3 Built Environment learners, followed by a group of Levels 1, 2 and 3 Bricklaying, Plastering, and Carpentry and Joinery pupils from Leicester College, were given a presentation by Mark Dixon, the Senior Site Manager who oversees work on the collection of two, three and four-bedroom homes close to the city’s thriving centre.
Coinciding with the college’s initiative to promote the need for specialist occupations amongst its students, the talk focussed on the career prospects of working within the construction sector, with Mark drawing on his knowledge and experience of quantity and land surveying.
It was followed by a visit from more than 20 of the college’s students to St Mary’s Park, during which they were personally escorted around the site by Mark, who was on hand to answer any questions pupils had about the build process or his own experiences of working in construction.
Having started his career in construction 28 years ago as a bricklayer, Mark has held a varied range of other positions within the sector, including Assistant Manager, Site Manager, and Senior Site Manager.
“I was delighted by my invitation to come and speak to pupils at Leicester College, and equally delighted to welcome them to our St Mary’s Park development,” said Mark.
“These students represent the future of the industry and I was more than happy to share my personal experiences of working in construction with them.
“The site visit was intended to give pupils a feel for what it’s like to work on site, as well as an understanding of how a housing development is constructed.
“We hope that the students enjoyed the experience and it has motivated them to continue pursuing a career in construction.”
Darren Room, Director of Construction at Leicester College said: “On behalf of Leicester College, I would like to express my sincere thanks to Westleigh Homes for their engagement with our Employability Week activities.
“Representatives of Westleigh visited the college to meet our students, giving a highly informative and enjoyable insight into employment in the construction industry.
“This was followed by site visits for three cohorts of Level 3 students on a nearby site that provided an invaluable experience for their studies and future career plans.
“We look forward to working with Westleigh in the future on similar projects.”
We offer a range of apprenticeship schemes aimed at young people who are interested in working in the industry, specialising in bricklaying, carpentry, joinery and groundwork trades.
The next cohort of apprentices will be taken on by us in September, and successful applicants will get hands-on experience at one of its developments across the Midlands and beyond alongside their college studies.
