Young apprentices from Leicestershire take their first step with Westleigh

We have taken on 13 apprentices across our sites in Leiestershire

We have taken on an impressive 13 apprentices at our construction sites across Leicestershire.

A total of five trainee joiners and seven trainee bricklayers who study at Leicester City College and an apprentice bricklayer from Stephenson College in Coalville will complete their trade apprenticeships under the guidance of Westleigh’s team of construction experts.

The advanced apprentice programme, which takes approximately three years to complete, will see the below trainees split their time between learning at college and working at various developments across the county.

The latest intake of apprentices was invited to an induction day event to learn more about the work that the company does and the role that they will play in helping to build on its already excellent reputation within the construction industry.

Apprentice joiner Luke Spencer, 19, said: “I’d looked at other trades but joinery really sparked my interest and I knew it was what I wanted to do.

“My brother works as a trainee Site Manager for Westleigh, so I think that played a part in choosing to do my apprenticeship here. He encouraged me to apply for it to see if it was for me.

“My first impression of Westleigh is that it’s a great company to work for that looks after its staff really well. I’m really enjoying myself and am looking forward to learning new skills and putting my knowledge into practice.”

Apprentice bricklayer Liam Smith, 16, added: “I decided to pursue bricklaying as a career after doing some work experience with my uncle, who has his own business.

“This made me realise how much I liked it and because Westleigh has such a great reputation, I knew it was the best company to learn with.

“The main thing that I have taken away from the induction day is the importance of health and safety and how it must be adhered to at all times while working on site. It’s also given me the opportunity to learn more about the company itself, including some of its big new developments.

“What I’m most looking forward about my apprenticeship is being able to earn while I learn!”

Ian Jones, Managing Director of Westleigh, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming a new group of young apprentices to our talented and ever-expanding bricklaying and joinery teams.

Helping our staff to realise their full potential is right at the heart of who we are as a company and we work very hard to support our apprentices right from the start.

“We hope that the apprentices enjoy learning their chosen trades with us and we would like to wish them every success for the future.”

A range of apprenticeship schemes are available with Westleigh, specialising in bricklaying, carpentry/joinery and groundwork trades.
